Carbon Reduction & Net Zero

In line with the Paris Agreement on climate change, we are committed to achieving Net Zero by 2050. We actively consider and implement initiatives to reduce our own carbon footprint (Scope 1), indirect emissions resulting from purchased energy (Scope 2) and indirect emissions from, for example, our suppliers' activities (Scope 3).

Product Design

Our design team collaborates closely with suppliers to prioritise sustainability in product design. By optimising glass weight, product dimensions, and container efficiency, we significantly reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency.

  • Sustainable
    Design

Our design team continuously reviews product design with sustainability at the fore.  All elements are considered to help reduce carbon emissions, including product weight, dimensions, palletisation and container optimisation.

  • Right Weighting Products

Aegg is committed to 80% of all volume to be ‘right weight’ by 2030.  Reducing the thickness of the walls (right weighting), without impacting performance, helps reduce the use of raw materials, reduces melting costs, and reduces transport costs through fuel costs and increasing load capacity.

  • Raw
    Materials

Glass can be endlessly recycled, refilled and reused.  Aegg has set our suppliers a target to increase cullet (raw material that comes from recycled glass) to 40% by 2030. Most of our manufacturing partners are located close to raw material extraction, limiting carbon emissions from transport.

Supply Chain

Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in our strategic approach to sourcing and supplier partnerships. We are dedicated to reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental responsibility across our supply chain.

  • We have put in place strategic sourcing supplier sustainability criteria that align with our carbon emission reduction ambitions.  For example, we regularly audit our partner manufacturers, including their sustainability partnerships and management system accreditations.

  • We welcome and support supplier sustainability projects, such as the GCA-led award-winning EKOMAT reverse vending machine recycling project and Recycling Detectives Primary School Education Project.

  • Many of our supply partners are already invested in solar energy.  For example, one of our manufacturing partners is well on their way to being 100% solar energy powered.

  • All glass manufacturers are dependent on the introduction of electric furnace technology to hit net zero by 2050.  We have the flexibility to partner with the most sustainable manufacturers once this technology is in place.

  • We only engage with shipping companies that have effective environmental policies in place, as well as the latest ships.  We look to maximise ships that use alternative fuels such as biodiesel, natural gas, and electricity.

AEGG'S Transport, Warehouse & Operational Solutions

By owning our own warehouse and fleet, we have more control over our processes and environmental impact.  We are constantly reviewing and putting in measures to reduce our carbon footprint whilst making our operations even more efficient.

  • We have invested in the TotalEnergies Pure Green tariff, which means we are powered by 100% renewable electricity generated from wind, solar, and hydro sources (and not from biomass, which is less sustainable). Read more here

  • We own our own fleet of trucks.  We put great emphasis on optimising cargo and fleet management to reduce the environmental impact of distribution.  We have also achieved a score of 4/5 for efficient and clean operations through ECO Stars. Read more here

  • We use GPS tracking to monitor routes and optimise delivery times, implement route planning software to minimise fuel consumption and utilise more efficient loading and unloading methods.

  • As part of our commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050, we plan to transition 50% of the HGV fleet to EV by 2034.  We have replaced half our gas forklift trucks with more environmentally friendly electric versions. In addition, our fleet of business-use cars is either all-electric or hybrid.

  • Aegg’s 120,000 sq ft warehouse at Eye in Suffolk is only 33 miles from the container port at Felixstowe, minimising road haulage and providing flexibility for customers’ ‘just in time’ stock management.

  • We have introduced smart warehouse flow and adhere to GFSI-recognised standards.

  • We are upgrading our operational measures to operate as energy-efficiently as possible.  This includes SMART BMS (Building Management Systems), occupancy-sensing and zonal controls, internal lobby doors to prevent heat loss and energy-efficient lighting.  Our warehouse roof has been designed to take solar panels on the south-facing elevations for a future introduction.

Community Engagement

At Aegg, sustainability isn't just about what we do in business - it’s about how we support our local community, too. We’re delighted to support several community initiatives, including

  • bird

    Supporting Local Ecology

Aegg is a Corporate Sponsor of the River Waveney Trust, a local ecology charity committed to ensuring the waters, habitats and catchment of The River Waveney are healthy for wildlife and people. The Trust collaborates on a range of projects which protect, enhance and promote the river. We actively support the Trust through corporate sponsorship and volunteering days, underpinning our commitment to the wider community.

  • re-utilise

Supporting a Local Sustainability & Wellbeing Initiative

We are proud to partner with re-utilise, a community-focused sustainability project dedicated to re-using items and promoting creativity.  We have donated thousands of items of our packaging so that they can work with the local community to turn them into cherished works of art and craft.  By bringing people together, they support and celebrate community as well as creativity, helping to combat isolation and improve people’s health and well-being.
